2013: 75-65, won California League second half title, eliminated by Visalia in first round of playoffs.
Manager: Don Sneddon (first season)
Projected lineup: SS Trevor Story, 3b Rosell Herrera, CF Francisco Sosa, C Will Swanner, LF Sean Dwyer, 1b Jordan Ribera, RF David Kandilas, DH Juan Ciriaco, 2b Matt Wessinger.
Projected rotation: RH Ben Alsup, RH Ryan Gibbard, RH Andrew Brown, LH Jayson Aquino, RH Matt Flemer.
Key relievers (all righties): Alving Mejias, Tyler Gagnon, Brandon Erbe, Shane Broyles, Rayan Gonzalez, Raul Fernandez, Jacob Newberry, Peter Tago.
Outlook: The unknown before the season started was the state of the pitching staff, since frequent movement during spring training meant the roster wasn’t set until just before parting for Modesto. Now the staff is a known quantity and through the first week of the season has posted historically poor numbers, taking an ERA of over 10 into the final game of the seven-day road trip. The spacious confines of John Thurman Field should help some of that, but outs are tough to get on the road in this hitters’ league under the best of circumstances. Offensively the Nuts have started strong, hitting. .266 so far. Trevor Story leads the way with a .346 average and hit for the cycle in Monday’s loss at Visalia. It’s a long, 140-game season, split into two halves, and six of the 10 teams will reach the California League playoffs. This is Modesto 10th season as an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, and only once during that time has Modesto failed to reach the postseason.
