ADELANTO -- The Modesto Nuts' success this season has been based on solid pitching that often has carried an uneven offense.

But if the last two nights are any indication, the Nuts' hitters will have to handle a heavier load when next week's playoffs begin.

One night after giving up 10 runs in a loss to Lake Elsinore, Modesto pitching was thrashed again on Friday, giving up a season-high 23 hits in a 17-5 loss to High Desert.

The Mavericks scored in every inning except the sixth, collecting 11 runs and 14 hits off Modesto starting pitcher Ethan Hollingsworth (3-3) in 4ª innings.

Beyer High graduate Chris Malone saved the bullpen by working a season-high 3º innings, allowing six runs on nine hits.

Meanwhile, the Nuts suffered through 15 strikeouts while collecting eight hits, including two by all-California League pick Jason Van Kooten, raising his average to .301.

The second straight loss was costly for Modesto, which saw its lead for the No. 2 spot in the North Division playoffs dwindle to one game over Bakersfield with three regular season games remaining. The Blaze defeated Rancho Cucamonga for their 21st win in 26 games.

Should the Nuts (73-64) and the Blaze (72-65) finish the season with identical records, Bakersfield would earn the No. 2 seed and the homefield advantage. Game one of the best-of-three Modesto-Bakersfield series will be played Wednesday at the home stadium of the No. 3 seed.

The Nuts could play anywhere from one to seven playoff games at John Thurman Field, depending on their seed and how far they advance.

Vouchers redeemable for complimentary general admission tickets for all home playoff games are available at all Stanislaus County Prime Shine Express Car Wash locations, all Boyett Petroleum and Cruisers locations in Modesto, Ceres and Salida and at Best Buy on Sisk Road.
