BAKERSFIELD — The Modesto Nuts got decent production from its offense and outstanding pitching on Sunday. But the Nuts' defense did them in.

Modesto committed four errors — leading to five unearned runs — in a 5-4 loss to the Bakersfield Blaze.

The disastrous defensive night spoiled a solid performance by Nuts starter Bruce Billings, who allowed three hits and struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Nuts second baseman Jason Van Kooten's error kept the inning alive, and Mauro Gomez followed with a two-run homer. Modesto committed three errors in Bakersfield's three-run seventh inning.

The Nuts rallied for two runs in the top of the eighth and had the tying run at third with two outs in the top of the ninth, but pinch hitter Lars Davis popped out.
