BAKERSFIELD — If the Modesto Nuts reach the California League playoffs, they owe much of their success to pitcher Cory Riordan.

The right-hander (11-6) won his sixth straight start Friday night, striking out nine and scattering five hits over eight innings during the Nuts' 6-3 victory over the Bakersfield Blaze. Matt Repec drove in three, including a two-run homer (his ninth) in the fifth, and Craig Baker needed only four pitches to retire the last two batters for his 32nd save.

The win, the Nuts' third straight, lowered Modesto's magic number to 10 over Bakersfield for a playoff berth.

The Nuts stroked four hits off Bakersfield lefty Tim Murphy (8-10) to take a 2-0 lead in the second. Warren Schaeffer, who had three hits for Modesto, capped the rally with an RBI single.

Reliever Randall Taylor yielded two runs in the ninth before Baker finished.
