VISALIA The Modesto Nuts have stumbled out of the gate in the California League's second half.
The Visalia Rawhide rallied for three runs in the fifth inning Friday night en route to a 4-2 victory. A crowd of 1,514 at Recreation Park watched the Nuts' record fall to 0-2 in the North Division. It marked the second straight game Modesto outhit Visalia and lost.
The Rawhide rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the fifth off Modesto lefty Kenneth Durst (2-6). A two-out, two-run single by Kyle Greene and an RBI double by Konrad Schmidt did the damage. Durst allowed four runs, all earned, in six innings.
Visalia's Bryan Henry and Leyson Septimo combined for four innings of shutout relief, though Septimo pitched out of trouble in the ninth. The win went to starter Bryan Shaw (3-4).
Modesto touched Shaw, however, for both runs in the second, thanks to a two-run double to right by Charles Blackmon. Jay Cox accounted for three of the Nuts' eight hits.
Modesto meets Visalia tonight before it begins a six-game homestand.
