VISALIA The Modesto Nuts opened the second half of the California League season the way they finished the first half in disappointing fashion.
Modesto, which was unable to earn the Cal League's first-half title, dropped an 8-4 decision to the Visalia Rawhide in the opening game of a three-game series on Thursday.
Visalia jumped out to an early lead, scoring once in the bottom of the first and three times in the bottom of the second against Modesto starter Connor Graham (4-4), who allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Modesto's Brian Rike hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning to pull the Nuts to within 4-2, but Visalia pulled away and closed out the victory.
Modesto plays at Visalia tonight and Saturday, then opens a three-game series at John Thurman against the San Jose Giants.
