Just when things couldn't get worse at the plate for Jay Cox, the Modesto Nuts left fielder caught a game-changing break Friday with two out and the game tied in the top of the ninth inning.

Cox had completed an 0 for 4 night at the plate with his second strikeout, but made it to first on a wild pitch and then came around to score the go-ahead run in the Nuts' 4-3 win over the host San Jose Giants.

After Cox reached first on the wild pitch, Daniel Mayora singled him to second and Jason Van Kooten follwed with an RBI single to right field.

The victory puts Modesto 1½ games ahead of San Jose in the California League North Division second-half standings.

Will Harris allowed only a single in the ninth inning to earn his third save of the season.

Modesto starter Jhoulys Chacin, who is being held on a tight pitch count by the Colorado Rockies organization, allowed two runs -- one earned -- over five innings. Four Modesto relievers combined to allow one run over four innings, with Jon George (1-0) getting the win.
