The World of Outlaws’ two top series will compete at the same track on the same days for the first time this weekend when the Concord, N.C.-based organization's sprint cars and late models participate in the inaugural Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
The three-day extravaganza begins with qualifying sessions Thursday night. There will be two rounds, with the first setting lineups for Friday’s heat races and the second setting the fields for Saturday night’s heats.
Defending World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz comes into the two-race weekend leading Joey Saldana by 115 points in the standings, so Schatz has only to start both features to clinch a second straight title. But Schtaz wants more.
“We've been greedy all season, so there's no reason to change that this week," said Schatz, who has won 19 times and finished in the top 10 a remarkable 69 times in 73 Outlaws races this year.
"There are only two more races this year and we want to win them both. There's nothing like winning that last race of the year and having that feeling throughout the winter.”
Schatz won the feature when the series ran at the four-tenths mile clay oval here earlier this year.
In the Outlaws Late Model Series, Steve Francis leads Chub Frank by 62 points with two races left. Francis can clinch the title by finishing at least 14th on Friday and Saturday nights.
Qualifying starts at 7p.m. Thursday, with racing at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Tickets for adults are $10 Thursday night, $35 for Friday and $35 for Saturday. A three-day ticket is available for $59. Children 12 and under are $5 Thursday night, $10 for Friday, $10 for Saturday and $19 for a three-day pass.
