The week’s big “news” in NASCAR was a news conference on Wednesday in which Joe Gibbs Racing confirmed what had been widely known for weeks, that it was leaving the Chevrolet camp to run Toyotas next year.
Chevrolet had its own “news” Friday, confirming the deal that keeps Hendrick Motorsports in its camp. There was never much of a question about that, so team owner Rick Hendrick was asked what the Gibbs defection meant.
“It doesn’t really mean much to me,” Hendrick said.
“I mean, I have to compete against them. They’re good friends and they’ve got good race teams. ...It’s good to see them have the success they’ve had. But we compete against everybody in the garage and it doesn’t make any difference to us.”
