Before he jetted off to The Netherlands to compete in the 24-hour world championships last week, Modesto ultramarathoner Jon Olsen came to our office to talk about writing a blog about his experiences.

The Maloof era in Sacramento, at times spirited and uplifting, at times dismal, appears to have come to an end.

Despite two losses earlier this season to Turlock High, Enochs baseball coach Matt Brown liked his chances in a third matchup. But Turlock scored four runs in the third — the big blow a three-run homer by Austin Bush — and went on to win 11-5 in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 baseball playoffs at the University of the Pacific.

Cal State Stanislaus athletes have been honored many times over the years at the Outstanding Athlete Awards Banquet. Yet no member of the Warriors had received the top OAA awards since 2005.

That run ended Wednesday night when basketball star Reggie Jones and soccer scoring machine Karenee Demery were named the respective men's and women's open-division athletes of the year for 2012.

Thousands of Modesto youth soccer players finally have a home of their own. The City Council voted 7-0 on Tuesday to approve an agreement between the city and the Modesto Youth Soccer Association that calls for the MYSA to operate the soccer complex at the new Mary Grogan Community Park.

Jennifer Moreno's first career home run opened the scoring and set the pace as Buhach Colony cruised to a 10-1 victory over the visiting Panthers in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 playoffs. In Modesto, Atwater was eliminated by Gregori, 8-1, in their playoff opener as every Jaguar batter had at least one hit.

The Golden Age Bears Fundraising Tournament held at McHenry was a winner for Paul Morelli, Cat Eastman and the local vets. Morelli topped the men's prize list with his 761 series. David Castro finished second (757), followed by Mark Downing (698). Cat Eastman was the lead for the women with a 735 set. Betty Plant (728) placed second. Third place was Venessa Duenas (720).
