GV's Mallory tapering at exactly right time

Teresa Mallory's timing couldn't be better.

The Golden Valley High junior, who ran away with the individual title at last week's Central California Cross Country Championships in Atwater, has won four consecutive meets heading into Saturday's Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section Meet at Frogtown in Angels Camp.

Last Wednesday, Mallory cruised to her second straight CCC girls individual title and her sixth victory overall in nine meets, finishing in 18 minutes, 25 seconds on the 3-mile course at Buhach Colony High. Her time was 14 seconds better than runner-up Amanda Garcia of Atwater (whose Falcons won the team title with four runners in the top 10).

As the weather has mercifully cooled off, Mallory has heated up with a personal-best in each of her past three meets while shaving 31 seconds off her time during that span. She's nearly two minutes faster since the opening CCC dual meet, which she won back on Sept. 9.

Saturday will be Mallory's second go on the hilly, 3-mile course at the Calaveras Country Fairgrounds. She was second (20:59) to Folsom's Morgan Pugh (20:34) at the Frogtown Invitational on Sept. 26.

• CCC BOYS CHAMP — Atwater's Pedro Osornio won the individual boys title at last Wednesday's CCC championships, clocking 15.02 — 30 seconds ahead of Los Banos' Flavio Castro. Rusman Purewall was third (15.37) to help Golden Valley win the team title and share the overall championship with Buhach Colony.

• WAC TITLES — Sophomores Kelsey Gallegos of Livingston and Dillon Mart of Orestimba blew away the competition en route to capturing league titles at last Thursday's Western Athletic Conference at Legion Park. Gallegos completed the 3.1-mile course in 20:09, followed by Patterson's Marisabel Carrillo (21:30) and Livingston's Adela Ramos (21:47).

Patterson claimed the team crown with 24 points to 31 for runner-up Livingston.

Mart finished with a winning time of 17:21. Hilmar's Jeffrey Sousa was second in 17:37 and Livingston's Isaias Contreras third in 17:44. Livingston, which placed five runners in the top 10, captured the team title.

• MLL CHAMPS — Bret Harte's Matt Airola and Summerville's Kristin Turner ran to victory in the Mother Lode League Championships last Thursday at Valley Springs. Airola, whose Bullfrogs also won the MLL team title, completed the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 35 seconds. Turner finished in 20:23 — nine seconds ahead of runner-up Susan Zech of Calaveras.
