CHOWCHILLA -- Central Valley High graduate Trevor Mew overcame a sore arm Friday night and, for the second time in less than a week, showed off his talent.
Mew passed for 177 yards and two touchdowns while the North intercepted five passes en route to a 36-14 romp in the 24th Chowchilla Rotary All-Star Football Game.
The Central Valley graduate also totaled 177 yards and three touchdowns and was named the MVP of the Lions all-star game last week in Stockton. Seventeen players took part in both wins.
A crowd of about 2,500 at Henry Massarro Stadium watched Mew, bound for Modesto Junior College, split time with Buhach Colony quarterback Kyle Davey. Mew completed seven of 13 passes, including a 23-yard touchdown strike to Golden Valley's Adrian Abarca early in the game.
"It was just a slant pattern," said Abarca, who caught four passes for 86 yards. "I caught the ball and there was a guy right on me. I had to shake him and then another guy wrapped me up. I just kept driving until I was in the end zone."
Chowchilla's Kyle Espinosa caught a 55-yard TD pass from Mew that increased the North's lead to 36-7 in the third quarter.
"He (Mew) ran the show pretty well. He was a gamer," North coach Dennis Stubbs said. "Our offensive line also was good for only three days practice. We thought we could throw but we ran it good, too."
Central Catholic linebacker T.J. Belton, the defense MVP in Stockton, enjoyed another strong game.
"Belton was awesome again," Stubbs said. "Anytime you have him on your side, good things will happen."
Los Banos' Rubal Sangha hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Davey late in the first half as the North led 22-7.
Jake Barcellos, another Los Banos graduate, was in the right place at the right time as he pounced on a muffed punt in the end zone for another North touchdown after halftime.
Chowchilla's Fred Gaines accounted for two of the North's interceptions. Merced's Bernard Bolden also picked up an interception as the North dominated.
"We thought our strength was in our defensive backfield," Stubbs said. "Our O-line did a great job of protecting early and it allowed us to get the ball to our weapons."
Also scoring for the North was Oakdale's Isaiah Mendez-Borba on a 4-yard run during the first quarter.
Stubbs, the victorious coach of the Lions game, picked up his first Rotary win. The South closed its deficit in the series to 13-11.
