Runner of the year: Rachel Van Nes, Modesto junior
One of the top runners in the Trans-Valley League saved her best for last with a 21st-place finish in the CIF State Division IV Championship. Was seventh in the sub-section meet and was sixth in the section Masters meet.
Part of the Bullfrogs' Division IV section team champion, Mikesell was fifth in the sub-section meet, was the section Division IV champion in 19:51, and placed 17th in the state meet as Bret Harte took 10th as a team.
Smooth freshman is the future of running in the Bret Harte program. Placed second in the sub-section meet -- her team's No. 1 placer -- followed by a fourth-place finish in the section championship and 34th in the state.
At nearly 6-feet tall, Rivers dwarfed most other cross country runners. She could run pretty fast as well. She took ninth in both the sub-section and section Masters Division IV meets, followed by a 58th-place finish at state.
Central California Conference individual champion was 18th in the Sac-Joaquin sub-section Division I meet, followed by a 17th-place finish at the section championships. Was two spots from qualifying for the state meet.
The Valley Oak League's fastest runner came out of nowhere to place second at the Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section Division III meet at Frogtown. Placed 12th at the section Masters championships, taking the final state meet berth.
