Runner of the year: Rachel Van Nes, Modesto junior

  • BECKY HOBBY. Hughson freshman

One of the top runners in the Trans-Valley League saved her best for last with a 21st-place finish in the CIF State Division IV Championship. Was seventh in the sub-section meet and was sixth in the section Masters meet.

  • SARA MIKESELL, Bret Harte senior

Part of the Bullfrogs' Division IV section team champion, Mikesell was fifth in the sub-section meet, was the section Division IV champion in 19:51, and placed 17th in the state meet as Bret Harte took 10th as a team.

  • KAYLEE SEDLER, Bret Harte freshman

Smooth freshman is the future of running in the Bret Harte program. Placed second in the sub-section meet -- her team's No. 1 placer -- followed by a fourth-place finish in the section championship and 34th in the state.

  • PEARL RIVERS, Escalon junior

At nearly 6-feet tall, Rivers dwarfed most other cross country runners. She could run pretty fast as well. She took ninth in both the sub-section and section Masters Division IV meets, followed by a 58th-place finish at state.

  • TERESA MALLORY, Golden Valley sophomore

Central California Conference individual champion was 18th in the Sac-Joaquin sub-section Division I meet, followed by a 17th-place finish at the section championships. Was two spots from qualifying for the state meet.

  • LIZZIE GROLLE, Sonora junior

The Valley Oak League's fastest runner came out of nowhere to place second at the Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section Division III meet at Frogtown. Placed 12th at the section Masters championships, taking the final state meet berth.
