Valley Oak League

Oakdale runs past Central Catholic for VOL title

The most highly anticipated football game of the season looked, for a quarter, like it was going to be one for the ages. And then Oakdale High’s players found another gear, turning a close game into a rout, beating Central Catholic 48-28 to gain a share of the Valley Oak League title and the conference’s No. 2 playoff seed.

Pictures: Tough day in the water for area water polo teams

With a combined 9-17 overall record, the Modesto Metro and Central California conferences took it on the chin Friday during the opening round of the DeLong Memorial Boys Water Polo Tournament held at Johansen, Downey and Tokay (Lodi) high schools. Locally, only Buhach Colony of the CCC, co-host Johansen of the MMC and Ripon of the Valley Oak League, escaped Day 1 without a loss. Today’s action gets under way at 8 a.m. at the same three pools, with Lincoln High (Stockton) also hosting games.
