Week 2 in the Stanislaus District gets off to an early start this week with a pair of Thursday night matchups.
Both games feature teams from the Modesto Metro Conference, with Bear Creek (Stockton) coming to town to take on Gregori at Don Lanphear Stadium, and Pitman (Turlock) making the short trip up Highway 99 to take on high-flying Modesto at Downey’s Chuck Hughes Stadium.
Both games kick off at 7:30 p.m.
Modesto (2-0) has scored 110 points this season, while Pitman (2-0), the No. 1 large school in The Bee’s Stanislaus District rankings, has posted 111 points. Both have scored at least 68 in a single game.
Never miss a local story.
So, expect some offense.
Modesto is led by senior quarterback Tiki Tonga, who averages 225 yards through the air and 97 on the ground, and junior running back Antonio Perez, averaging 168 rushing yards per game.
Pitman is led offensively by quarterback Wyatt Clapper, running backs Drew Lewis and Mario Lewis, and multi-threat Logan Wolfley.
Bear Creek is coming off a 36-0 win over McNair, which has qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs four out of the last five seasons.
“It’s the best BC team in the last five seasons,” Gregori coach Jason McCoy said in a text conversation earlier this week.
The Jaguars, with their Wing-T offense, have a stable of star running backs.
Junior Tyler Janitz, who sat out last week with a bruised stomach, rushed for 182 yards in his only game this season. He is expected to play this week. Seniors Andrew Nash and Alex Labanon are averaging 120 and 99 yards per contest, respectively.
