Los Banos quarterback Adam Herrera rushed for 319 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 120 yards and a pair of scores in leading his Tigers to a 59-20 win over El Capitan last Friday night in Merced.
With a rushing performance like that, you’d figure it would be a school record, right? Guess again.
“It’s not?” said Herrera. “One of the coaches told me I might have broken the record, but I was never able to check.”
Unfortunately for Herrera, the school record still belongs to James Sams, who rushed for 354 yards in a 42-28 win over Manteca on Sept. 7, 2012. But Sams needed 40 carries to set the mark. Herrera amassed his total on a mere 14 attempts, a whopping 23 yards per carry.
“I knew I was running a lot but I was surprised when the coach told me I ran for over 300 yards,” said Herrera, a 5-foot-10, 175-pounder who also plays in the defensive backfield. “I had no clue.”
The Tigers are now 5-1 this season and 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference, with a showdown this Friday night against undefeated Patterson (6-0, 2-0).
