During Manteca High’s 2013 run to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III football championship, an eighth-grader named Gino Campiotti was the waterboy for the team.
Last week, that waterboy led the Buffaloes to the section’s Division IV championship and a spot in a CIF Northern California regional bowl game against an opponent to be determined.
Campiotti, a 6-foot-3, 185 pound quarterback, completed 13 of 22 pass attempts for 318 yards and four touchdowns in a 50-28 romp over Placer.
“In seventh and eighth grade I was the water boy,” said Campiotti, who posed for pictures with Manteca youth football players after Saturday’s victory. “I was on the field during all that stuff and got to experience the tears of joy. I always pushed myself to reach that goal some day.”
Never miss a local story.
Back in 2013, Manteca lost the NorCal championship to Enterprise of Redding.
“Right now we’re going to be rememberd for the section title,” said Campiotti. “But we don’t really make history until we win the NorCal bowl.”
