8:36 a.m.: We're about 15 minutes away from the start of the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Wrestling Championships at Stockton Arena. Central Catholic freshman Cristian Dominguez, despite a gunshot pellot lodged near the bone of his right arm, will go against Franklin-Elk Grove senior Ali Khan in the 145-pound class. Dominguez is one amazing kid. He took on home invaders at his Salida home on Wednesday night, and not even a gunshot wound will keep him away from his first-round match this morning. Doctors reportedly won't try to take out the pellot. We understand Cristian's father will be released this morning. He's OK, too. Great news after a harrowing incident.
9:24 a.m.: Logan Eaton of Oakdale (106), Adam Velasquez of Modesto (106) and Nico Colunga of Oakdale (113) all won 1st-round matches at SJS Masters Wrestling.
More first-round winners: Josh Bustamante of Los Banos (120), Tyler Felix of Los Banos (113) and Trevor Williams of Oakdale (120). Felix by tech, Bustamante and Williams by fall.
Favorites win in first round: Rafael Herrera of Turlock (126) and 2013 state champion Israel Saavedra of Modesto (120), both by fall. Also winning was Tanner Browning of Golden Valley (113) by decision.
Central Catholic freshman Cristian Dominguez, only two days after he was shot in the right arm in a home invasion, defeated Franklin of Elk Grove senior Ali Khan 13-4 in 145-pound first-round match at SJS Masters Wrestling. His lower right arm was bandaged but he dominated the bout. His father David, his left arm in a sling and in some serious pain, pulled himself out of the hospital to sat in a coach'es chair neat the mat. Cristian's only problem – he replaced a contact lens after the match ended.
First-round winners at Masters Wrestling: Reggie Bland of Central Catholic (182), Nathan Ah-You of Gregori (170), Antonio Melo of Hilmar by fall (182), Kenneth Hamel of Merced (182), and A.J. Camarena of Escalon (195).
12:27 p.m.: There were no major surprises through first round of Masters Wrestling. The favorites romped. Adam Velasquez of Modesto is 2-0 with a quick pin as 108s begin the second round. ... Late first-round winners at 285: Tony Lopes of Merced (OT) and Albert Gonzales of Turlock by fall. The big story no doubt was Cristian Dominguez of Central Catholic, who was shot in the right arm in a home invasion Wednesday night, dominated Ali Khan of Franklin of Elk Grove 13-4.
