For the second consecutive year, the Beyer and Golden Valley High baseball teams will meet in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs.
And for the second consecutive year, it appears both teams will start the same pitchers.
Last year, the Cougars toppled the Patriots when they rallied for 10 runs in the 11th inning in an 11-1 victory in the first round in Stockton.
Today, the teams meet in a second round game at University of the Pacific's Klein Family Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. Central California Conference champion Buhach Colony and Tri-Cities Athletic League champion St. Mary's meet in the 7 p.m. nightcap.
Never miss a local story.
Beyer is expected to send ace left-hander Kyle Barrett (10-1, 1.49 ERA) to the mound. He'll most likely face Golden Valley ace Trevor Cesar (7-0, 0.77 ERA) in a matchup of two of the Stanislaus District's top pitchers.
Barrett only threw 72 pitches in the Patriots' 12-2 first-round victory in five innings over Tracy.
"Five days of rest and he didn't throw a lot of pitches," Beyer co-coach Steve Clark said after the Patriots' win over West High of Tracy. "We'll have to wait and see."
Cesar, who didn't feel well in the Cougars' 8-5 win over Tracy, only went two innings and threw very few pitches.
Beyer second baseman Blake Barber thinks that'll be the matchup.
"It'll be Kyle vs. Cesar, that's a great matchup," he said. "It's a big game, too."
In the later game, Buhach Colony is expected to throw Stanford-bound lefty Brett Mooneyham (8-1, 0.60 ERA).
In Division V baseball action at Lodi's Tony Zupo Field, Central Catholic and Escalon meet for the conclusion of their best-of-three series. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., and if Escalon wins, the final game of the series would immediately follow.
The defending section champion Raiders beat the Cougars 14-9 in their first game Saturday.
And in Division VII action at Galt Community Park, Harvest Christian League No. 3 team Big Valley Christian takes on Brookside Christian in a battle of league rivals.
Brookside Christian beat Big Valley Christian 9-3 in the first game of the series Saturday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m., with the second game to follow should Big Valley Christian win.
