Athletes to watch: Davis' boys and girls are the favorites to win the MMC. On the boys side, watch out for sprinters Rashad Warren and Justin Nesbitt and distance runners Ronnie Bruce and Roberto Rosas. On the girls side, it's distance runner Amanda Innes and 400-meter runner Angel Bobo. ... Modesto's Matt Maldonado is the returning 1,600-meter champion from the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet. Fellow Panther Marty Pyeatt also is solid in the distances. Modesto High's Stephanie Stavrianoudakis just missed qualifying for state last year and is tough in the 400 and the jumps. ... Downey juniors Kaylin Garcia (high jump) and Robert Cash (triple jump) are state meet threats in their events. ... Sonora's Evan Dambacher (400) and Anthony Woodward (pole vault) are among the best in the area in their events. ... Central Valley hurdler Latrisha Jordan, the school's first state meet qualifier, is hoping to make it two years in a row. ... Pitman's Josh Day cleared 14-6 in the pole vault at the Sierra Invitational. ... Beyer's Kendall Morris and Buhach Colony's Rachel Hammar are among the area's top female throwers (shot put, discus).
