Waterford High's regular-season soccer finale Monday was played in honor of its seniors, and the Wildcats took advantage when given the chance.
Juan Gutierrez drew a foul and earned the Wildcats a penalty kick in the 64th minute, and all fingers pointed to Tyler Johnson to do the honor. Johnson, a four-year veteran who plays stopper and thus doesn't get opportunities to score, kicked the ball into the net for his first career goal, and Waterford completed the first unbeaten regular season in the school's seven-year history with a 5-0 victory over Le Grand.
"They wanted him to get a goal. It was a great gesture on their part," coach Barry Wixom said.
Carlos Navarrete scored three goals to raise his season total to 52, second in the state, and senior goaltender Carlos Duarte received his first playing time of the season and combined with Victor Gutierrez on the Wildcats' third shutout in four games.
Never miss a local story.
Waterford will take a 20-0-4 overall record into its Sac-Joaquin Section playoff opener next Tuesday. The Wildcats won the Southern League title with a 13-0-2 mark.
"I'm elated," Wixom said. "This team was 6-21-1 two years ago, and 9-16-2 last year. This team has proven me totally wrong in a lot of ways. They're an incredible group of kids. They have this desire, this drive, and they show it on the field."
