Central Catholic High is sending 13 senior athletes to a four-year university, where they’ll compete in either football, basketball, soccer, track, cheerleading, swim and wrestling.
Individually, the Raider standouts have enjoyed their moment alone in the spotlight, cementing their commitments with Signing Day parties in their home or the foyer of the Mark Gallo Health and Fitness Center.
They came together recently for a “Next Level Celebration,” wearing their school’s new colors. Fittingly, the event was held in the old gymnasium, a building seemingly stitched together with league and Sac-Joaquin Section pennants.
Wrestler Steven Abbate donned Stanford’s cardinal red, while soccer’s Robert Mejia and football’s Montell Bland represent the future of UC Davis athletics.
Cheerleader Rachael Hunt sat in front a UCLA banner and pom-poms, leaning into classmate Tiana Jackson, who will wrestle at Menlo College, for a photo opportunity.
Soccer standout Bella Cuevas will anchor the back line at Holy Cross, while Alexandra Candelario will set the pace in the backcourt at Holy Names.
The four-time CIF State champion football program will be well-represented on the college map.
Bryce Wade will kick field goals at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and DaRon Bland is headed to Sacramento State.
Sarah Truxton will swim at Lake Forest College, while multi-sport athletes Jared Rice and Conor Fenton have settled on one sport. Rice will walk onto the Cal Poly basketball team, while Fenton will play for Denison in Ohio.
Jahi Corbin will run track at Chico State.
Athletic director Billy Hylla commended each athlete for their effort and sacrifice. To achieve their goals, required a measure of excellence on and off the field of play.
It’s “a combination of athletic and academic success,” Hylla said.
