TURLOCK — The young Cal State Stanislaus softball team is following the weather — warm and getting warmer.
The Warriors pounded 11 hits and beat Hawaii-Hilo 10-3 Wednesday in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader. The visitors from the islands (23-10) rebounded to win the second game 6-2.
Veronica Luna, batting No. 9 in the order, went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs for Stanislaus (6-20-1) in the first game. The run support helped freshman starter Brittani Weatherford to her third win. In the nightcap, Jennifer Arnold yielded a two-run homer in the first inning.
The games were a prelude to Stanislaus' 22-team Tournament of Champions this weekend. Pedretti Sports Complex and Warrior Field will stage 73 games over three days.
CSUS TRACK — Brittni Showers sits in third place in her section with 2,395 points after the first day of the heptathlon at the Cal Multi-Meet in Berkeley. Showers, a junior from Doylestown, Ohio, and Moorpark Community College, is 31 points ahead of the pace she set three weeks ago in Chico. Her leap of 4 feet, 5½ inches in the high jump was her heptathlon best.
