Modesto Junior College swept a Big 8 men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader on Tuesday with a pair of victories over Consumes River College at the MJC gymnasium.
Jemell King led the way with 26 points as the Pirates (19-8, 12-3 Big 8) defeated the Hawks 82-78.
Meanwhile, Colleen Ibasco scored a team-high 18 points as MJC’s women’s team (12-13, 5-10) defeated CRC 91-66.
The men led comfortably most of the way and held a double-digit lead with minutes to play. But a late run by the Hawks trimmed the lead to two with just 19 seconds remaining. King and Jaron Dickson (15 points) were able to hit free throws down the stretch to keep Cosumnes River at bay.
Rigo Gutierrez and Nick Obazuaye contributed 12 points apiece.
On the women’s side, Brooklyn Larkin scored 21 to lead the Hawks, while Trina Shaner (18), Micaela Dagler (13) and Erica Oswald (10) joined Larkin in double figures. But the rest of the team combined to score just four points.
IN addition to Ibasco, sophomore point guard Vai Fesili finished with 14 while Shealyn Craven added 12. Tia Patterson chipped in with nine while Lailoni Gaines. Mikaela Jimenez and Akaysha Simpkins each added eight points.
The Pirates will wrap up Big 8 play Thursday when they host Folsom Lake. The men’s game tips at 5:30 p.m. while the women get underway at 7:30.
Playoff brackets will be announced Sunday. The mean appear to be a virtual lock to host a first-round contest, while the women still have a shot to grab a postseason berth.
