Top-seeded Ilya Osintsev rolled into the semifinals of the 52nd annual Modesto Open tennis tournament Saturday.

However, the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds fell short on a day of mild upsets at the Modesto Fitness and Racquet Club.

Two-time winner Jan Tiilikainen of Reno, who had lost just five games on his way to the quarterfinals and was seeded second, fell to Elk Grove’s Cameron Klinger 6-3, 7-6 (5).

In Sunday’s 8:30 a.m. semifinal, Klinger will meet San Jose’s Eugene Muchynski, who pulled off a mild upset by handing No. 3 seed Logan Staggs of Tracy a 6-0, 6-4 defeat.

In the other 8:30 a.m. semifinal, Osintsev, who beat Sacramento’s Lovedeep Singh 6-4, 6-1, will meet fourth-seeded Brandon Sutter, who beat Garrett Auproux of Suisun City 6-0, 6-3.

Sutter was a quarterfinalist in last year’s Modesto Open singles tournament and a finalist in doubles. Muchynski reached the singles final in 2011.

The men’s final is at noon Sunday.

On the women’s side, top-seeded Lauren Stratman of Goleta reached Sunday’s 10:30 a.m. final in thrilling fashion. After dispatching Abbie Mulbarger 6-2, 6-3, Stratman rallied from a set down to beat Union City’s Rachel Eason 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 6-2.

Stratman will meet the winner of the semifinal between Pleasanton’s Shivani Doraiswami, regarded as one of the top juniors in Northern California, and Madeline Almeida of El Dorado Hills.

The men’s doubles and mixed doubles semifinals are Sunday morning, and the finals start at 4:30 p.m. (men’s) and 6 p.m. (mixed).
