MANTECA IN DIVISION IV BASEBALL FINAL
Manteca High School, champion of the Valley Oak League, will take on Sierra Valley Conference champ Vista del Lago of Folsom tonight at 6 for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV baseball championship at Tony Zupo Field in Lodi. Strangely enough, the Eagles (26-5) have faced nothing but VOL foes in the section playoffs. They beat Oakdale in the opening round, then faced Sierra in three consecutive matchups, winning two of three to advance to today’s championship. Meanwhile, the Mustangs (24-3) have faced nothing but SVL teams, defeating El Dorado (Placerville) in the opener then taking a pair from Cosumnes Oaks (Elk Grove). Both teams figure to ride their southpaw aces to victory. Manteca will turn to Jake Corn, who will attend the University of Oregon next season, while Vista del Lago will send Andrew Schantz to the hill. Schantz is undefeated (9-0) this season and threw a three-hit shutout in his last start, a 2-0 victory over Sierra. Schantz provided the only runs in the game on a two-run home run.
