Veteran driver George Lefler of Denair sits on top of the season's point standings for modified stock cars at Merced Speedway.
Lefler, who began racing in 1970, has placed consistently in the top 10 during Sunday night racing at the quarter-mile dirt track.
Last week he bolstered his lead in the standings with a third-place finish, his best of the season. Called "Mr. Consistancy" by his competition,
Lefler is staying calm as the last three races of the season approach. "It sure would be nice to be champion," said the soft-spoken manager for Calaveras Materials. "I try not to think about it when I'm racing, though. I just try to finish each race as far up as I can."
Never miss a local story.
Lefler joins the region's top dirt modifieds this Sunday at 5 p.m. Merced Speedway is at 900 Martin Luther King Way in the Merced Fairgrounds.
