STOCKTON -- Buhach Colony has won two Sac-Joaquin Section baseball titles and the Thunder hopes to stay on course for a third tonight when its hosts St. Mary's in the sub-section final at the University of the Pacific.
The Thunder (26-4) is unbeaten in the tournament and would have to lose twice to be denied a berth in next weekend's best-of-three section finals. The game starts at 5 p.m., and if St. Mary's wins, a winner-take-all game will be played afterward.
Jesuit of Carmichael (24-6) is unbeaten up north and will also have to lose twice to be denied a trip to the final series.
Buhach won its first two titles in Division III, when it was playing in the Valley Oak League.
Never miss a local story.
The Thunder will have access to all three of its pitchers, including lefty Brett Mooneyham (9-1, 0.54 ERA) and righty Justin Koehler (2-2, 0.91), who have signed letters of intent with Cal State Fullerton and Stanford, respectively.
Section officials said Thursday that Dylan Floro (10-1, 0.77) also is eligible to throw 2º innings. Floro made three appearances this week, the maximum allowed, but two of those appearances were in the same game.
A state rules interpreter ruled that Floro's two appearances on Wednesday -- he started, left after five and returned to get the final out -- count as only one because they came in one game.
