Modesto High, playing a six singles-three doubles tennis format for the first time this season, won matches in each of those slots to rout Folsom 8-1 on Wednesday in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Division I quarterfinals at Del Rio Country Club.
The Panthers (20-4) will play Davis-Yolo in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Del Rio. The Blue Devils shut out Turlock 9-0 on Wednesday.
Atul Bali of Modesto beat Gabe Payne 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, and Stefan Ayala defeated Andrew Irzyk 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6. Modesto's No. 3 doubles team of Scott Chau and Rajen Duggal swept Namen Gupta and Kent Wellington 6-3, 6-2.
GUSTINE 2, LIVINGSTON 1, at Gustine — Ben Griset pitched a no-hitter and struck out 16 as the Redskins (14-8, 9-5 WAC) moved closer to a playoff berth. Gustine can clinch the WAC's No. 2 seed in the Division V playoffs with a win today at Livingston. Gustine and Hilmar are tied at 9-5 in league play, but Gustine holds the tiebreaker edge.
DOWNEY 10, MODESTO 5, at Modesto — The Knights (5-19, 3-11 MMC) went ahead for good with a run in the top of the first. Kirk Rocha, Hunter Schlander and Ryan Hamilton homered for Downey. Klayton Miller was 3 for 4 with three steals for the Panthers (6-19, 4-10).
ENOCHS 4, JOHANSEN 3, at Johansen — The Eagles (10-16, 5-9 MMC) broke a 3-3 tie with the Vikings (11-15, 7-7) in the top of the sixth. Mike Stewart reached on an error, stole second and went to third when the throw went into center field, and scored on a wild pitch.
WATERFORD 13, DELHI 0, at Delhi — Kody Hampton overcame control problems (six walks and one hit batter) by allowing one hit and striking out seven in four scoreless innings to help the Wildcats (10-13, 7-7 SL) stay in the playoff hunt with a win over the Hawks (1-18, 1-13). Waterford plays host to Le Grand on Friday with a playoff berth on the line. Mikey Erickson hit his third homer of the season.
CENTRAL VALLEY 4, CERES 3, at Central Valley — Martin Gomez struck out 10 and survived a three-run rally in the top of the seventh as the Hawks (11-14, 6-7 VOL) hung on to beat the Bulldogs (9-15, 5-8). Gomez walked the leadoff hitter in the seventh and surrendered another walk and a double and single as Ceres scored all three runs. R.C. Cope went 3 for 3 for the Bulldogs but was left on deck with the tying run stranded at second after Gomez registered his 10th strikeout and a groundout to end the game.
MODESTO CHR. 5, HUGHSON 2, at Modesto Christian — Brittani McGue's triple capped a five-run third, and the Crusaders (21-5, 12-2) clinched a tie for the Trans-Valley League title. They can win an outright championship if they beat Escalon (11-3) on Friday.
Track and Field
TVL CHAMPIONSHIPS, at Riverbank — The host Bruins captured the boys and girls championships. German Fernandez led the boys, breaking three league records in winning the 800 meters (1 minute, 55.59), 1,600 (4:14.03) and 3,200 (9:09.9). Marissa Miglin led the Riverbank girls, winning the high jump (4-10), 300 hurdles (47.74) and running a leg on the winning 4x400 relay team.
Taryn Garza of the Modesto Christian girls won the 100 (12.84), 200 (26.09) and 400 (58.64).
