Michael McKenry hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning, and closer Andrew Johnston got out of trouble in the home half as the Modesto Nuts defeated the host Bakersfield Blaze 9-7 on Thursday night in a California League game.
Back-to-back three-run innings in the second and third helped the Nuts take a 6-0 lead, but a four-run eighth cut Modesto's lead to 7-6.
Cole Garner singled with one out in the ninth, and McKenry followed with his third homer of the season.
Johnston began the bottom of the ninth by allowing an infield single to Marcus Lemon and then throwing away the ball. Lemon went to third and scored on a balk. Johnston then walked Julio Borbon, and Borbon stole second. Johnston struck out Jose Vallejo, retired Grant Gerrard on a grounder to short and struck out Chad Tracy swinging to end the game.
Never miss a local story.
Garner had three of Modesto's 12 hits, and Jay Cox hit a three-run homer in the second.
