Sammy Bryant's three-run homer highlighted a 7-2 victory for the Modesto Junior College baseball team at Santa Rosa on Tuesday. With the Big 8 Conference win, the Pirates clinched a spot in the North Super Regional Playoffs that begin May 8.
Bryant's home run came in Modesto's five-run eighth, breaking a 2-2 tie. Bryant also hit an RBI double. Ross Brayton, David Jacques and David Whiteside each had three hits for the Pirates (21-17, 10-10 Big 8). Modesto starter Spencer Arroyo didn't give up an earned run and struck out six in eight innings.
MJC AT STATE, at Mission Viejo — The Pirates have two state champion contenders in Jen Cadmus and Jaymie Lenz, who are seeded second in the 50 free and 50 breaststroke.
The women lead a host of MJC swimmers seeking titles today at the California Community College Swimming and Diving Championships at Saddleback College. The Pirate women, who set nine school records this season, are hoping to finish among the top five teams in the state.
Karen Ard, Brianna Leam and Kelli Sargent also qualified as individuals, and the Pirates will compete in five relays. Diver Becky Dessert qualified on the 3-meter board. Modesto's men will also compete in five relays.
MJC'S BEST, at Sacramento — The Pirates shot their lowest team score of the season, a 397 at the Big 8 Championships, on the par-72 Lincoln Hills Golf Course. Sierra won the team score with a 354, and Delta's Garrett Baxley was the medalist with a 66. Robert Freese led Modesto with a 75. Freese, Chris Jamero (76) and Joel Hopkins (78) qualified for the NorCal Championships that are Monday at Stockton's Brookside CC.
