Congratulations to St. Mary's of Albany on winning the fabulous and exciting boys basketball game on March 8. It was a great contest and a lot of fun to watch.
As a spectator at Saturday's basketball game between St. Mary's and Modesto Christian, I was stunned and surprised how St. Mary's fans, students, parents and coaches conducted themselves during and after this great game. Unfortunately, I sat on the wrong side of the gym because I was immersed with fans that were mean, spiteful, hateful and outright blatant with the way they conducted themselves.
It's one thing to cheer your team to a win. I have never seen any fan of any team we have ever played scream obscenities and heckle a player. I have never seen any fan of any team we have played scream obscenities at the bench of players of an opposing team. Before the game was over, I witnessed the complete bench of players and coaches for St. Mary's run out into the middle of the floor screaming and celebrating when the game wasn't even over. This was bad sportsmanship, and how they didn't receive a technical foul for this is beyond me.
A lot of people are jealous of success, and Modesto Christian is proud of our athletes and in general our students. We have fans that get out of hand, too, but they do not heckle athletes from other teams and if they do they are immediately dealt with by the athletic director and/or our principal. I did not see any representative from St. Mary's confront these people, and they were obvious with what they were doing because people from across the gym noticed it and could hear what they were saying. A CIF official had to come over and ask them to stop.
My suggestion to the administration at St. Mary's is to address this behavior earlier in the season so as not to make your school, students and faculty look bad in the eyes of people. Instead of people being proud of your team and looking up to them, we will remember how we and our players were treated.
Signed, a very disappointed basketball fan.
