PATTERSON — Andy Moren of Cal State Stanislaus defeated a field of NCAA Division I players in capturing the individual medalist honor Tuesday at the Drake Intercollegiate tournament at Diablo Grande Golf Club.
Erick Justesen finished fourth in leading the Division II Warriors to a third-place finish in an 11-team field. The tournament was hosted by Drake University and won by Loyola College of Maryland with a 914 score over three rounds. Austin Peay (918) was second and Stanislaus (923) third. It was the Warriors' fifth top-three finish in a row and sixth in the 2007-08 season.
Moren, who played as an individual in the tournament, rebounded from a rough spring season thus far to win with an even-par 216. Before Tuesday's win, Moren's best finish this season was placing second at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate last fall in Hawaii.
Moren started with a 79 in round one, when several high scores were posted. He shot a 67 in round two and a 70 on Tuesday to win by five strokes. Loyola's Chris Derby and Austin Peay's Erik Barnes tied for second at 221.
Never miss a local story.
Justesen was fourth with a 223. Ryan Nickell of Stanislaus tied for 15th at 233, and Ben Van Vuren tied for 17th at 234. Jason McHargue shot 238 and Jesse Contreras 247 for Stanislaus.
The tournament featured nine Division I teams with Stanislaus the only Division II team and Cal State San Marcos representing Division III.
