Tim McCoy and two relievers combined on a three-hitter Friday as Davis High opened Modesto Metro Conference play with a 3-2 win over rival Johansen.
The Vikings (3-6) scored twice in the fifth to cut Davis' lead to 3-2, but Michael Creamer retired the final eight batters to get the save and sew up the Spartans' victory.
McCoy's triple in the fourth gave Davis (7-1) a 2-0 lead, then he scored on a wild pitch.
ENOCHS 10, DOWNEY 5, at Downey -- Kevin Miller survived a rocky fifth inning and the Eagles (4-5) scored three in the seventh to pull away for an MMC win over the Knights (0-6).
Miller (eight strikeouts) carried a 7-0 lead into the fifth, but Downey scored four runs. Jackson Boles had three RBIs and Brian Dix went 4-for-5 to lead Enochs' 17-hit attack.
PITMAN 4, OAKDALE 3, at Turlock-- Nathan Gonzalez fired a three-hitter, with 10 strikeouts, and drove in the tying and game-winning runs as the Pride (7-3) nipped the Mustangs (6-2) in a non-league showdown between two of the Stanislaus District's top teams.
Oakdale scored in the top of the sixth for a 3-2 lead, but the Pride loaded the bases on a single, error and a fielder's choice -- the throw to first was late when the third batter of the inning tried to bunt his teammates up. Gonzalez then followed with a two-run single.
HILMAR 4, LIVINGSTON 3, at Livingston -- George Solario's three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh made it close, but the Yellowjackets (6-4) escaped as reliever Ross Gonsalves came in to retire the final batter to beat the Wolves (2-6) in a Western Athletic Conference opener. Hilmar's Justin Rodrigues (3-0) went 6º innings.
Livingston's Anthony Mendoza struck out 10 while going the distance, but he struggled to retire Hugh Ewing. He was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, belting a two-run double in the fifth to make it 3-0.
CENTRAL CATHOLIC 10, GUSTINE 5, at Gustine -- Ryan Tiscareno hit two homers, including a three-run shot in the seventh, as the Raiders (7-1) opened WAC play by beating the Redskins (3-3).
TURLOCK CHR. 4, LE GRAND 1, at Le Grand -- Jordan Buchanan and Eli Davis combined to strike out nine and fire a one-hitter, leading the Eagles (5-1) past the Bulldogs (3-6) to open the Southern League.
Le Grand's Dominic Giampaoli singled in the second off Buchanan (2-0), and Davis struck out five in three hitless innings of relief.
DENAIR 7, WATERFORD 5, at Waterford -- The Coyotes (4-1) capitalized on four errors to score four runs in the second, then held on to beat the Wildcats (3-5) in an SL opener. Waterford loaded the bases with two out in the seventh before reliever Garrett Soares retired Jose Garcia on a comebacker.
MARIPOSA 14, DELHI 0, at Delhi -- Joey Jarrett gave up one hit in four innings and Jarrett Miller doubled in two runs during a six-run second as the Grizzlies (4-3) beat the Coyotes (0-3) in an SL opener.
CALAVERAS 9, ARGONAUT 3, at Argonaut -- Steve Frater threw a two-hitter and struck out 11 as the Redskins (5-2, 1-0 Mother Lode League) beat the Mustangs.
EAST UNION 5, TOKAY 4, at Manteca -- Steven Weddington lined a two-out double off the left-field fence in the bottom of the eighth to score Teddy Anderson from second and lift the Lancers (2-2) over the Flames (7-23) in non-league play.
Anderson reached on a throwing error. Weddington pitched the final five innings, allowing two hits and striking out six. He also had three RBIs.
HUGHSON 9, CENTRAL VALLEY 6, at Ceres -- Jake Etcheverry's three-run triple with two out in the third gave the Huskies (5-3) a big lead, but they had to hold on at the end to beat the Hawks (4-4).
CV's Martin Gomez ripped a two-run triple and scored on Brian Creek's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, before reliever Aaron Stice retired the final batter.
CERES 5, ATWATER 4, at Ceres -- Freshman Tyler Cumming picked up his first victory, striking out six and giving up five hits in six innings for the Bulldogs (2-5).
Zach Atchison drove in the winning run on a base hit in the bottom of the seventh after Kevin Cope walked and advanced on a Martino Berlotti single.
SUMMERVILLE 7, BRET HARTE 5, at Tuolumne City -- Sloan Hannah homered and drove in three runs and winning pitcher Corinne Brick had two run-scoring singles to lead the Bears (3-4) past the Bullfrogs to open the Mother Lode League.
MODESTO CHR. 10, RIPON CHR. 0, at Salida -- Kendell Taylor hurled a one-hitter, striking out eight with no walks, and Halee Vella belted a two-run homer as the Crusaders (5-2) opened the Trans-Valley League by beating the Knights. Erin Loretelli's two-run double in the fourth gave MC a 9-0 lead.
ESCALON 10, RIPON 0, at Escalon -- Caitlin Brooks scattered three hits while striking out 12 with no walks, and Kattie Schmidig drove in four runs to lead the Cougars (6-5) past the Indians in a TVL opener.
Corrie Dollarhide was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, as the Cougars pounded out 15 hits.
WATERFORD 2, TURLOCK CHR. 1, at Waterford -- Kendra Curtis hurled a three-hitter, striking out 11 and walking just two, and Adrianna Madrigal's two-run double in the fourth provided the scoring as the Wildcats (3-3) opened Southern League play by beating the Eagles (2-6).
HILMAR 13, GUSTINE 0, at Hilmar -- Blake Lopes had two goals and two assists in about 20 minutes of play, as the Yellowjackets (12-2, 2-0 WAC) beat the Redskins.
ORESTIMBA 3, LIVINGSTON 1, at Newman -- Cecily Leon scored twice and assisted on a third goal to lead the Warriors past the Wolves in the WAC.
CENTRAL 1, PATTERSON 0, at Patterson -- Kendall Wesenberg scored and Cal State Stanislaus-bound Nicole Meyer led the Raiders' defense in a shutout.
BEYER SWEEPS DOWNEY, at Beyer -- David LaFlamme, a transfer from Big Valley Christian, won the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke as the Patriots' boys beat the Knights 108-63 in the MMC.
The Bispo sisters, Karlee and Kassy, combined to win four events, but the Knights still fell 95-85.
