LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- DaShawn Wright scored 17 points and led eighth-seeded San Jose State past ninth-seeded Louisiana Tech 64-62 in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday.
Wright was one of four Spartans who contributed double-digit points as San Jose State went 26 for 57 from the field.
It was a free throw by Tim Pierce that gave San Jose (13-18, 5-12) a 63-62 lead with 1:24 left to play. Freshman Justin Graham, a Ripon High graduate, followed up with another free throw for the Spartans to seal the win. Graham had three points, three assists and three rebounds.
Junior guard J.C. Clark led the Bulldogs (6-24, 3-14) with 17 points.
The Spartans meet No. 1 Utah State (23-9, 12-4) on Thursday. Also in the tourney that day, No. 6 Fresno State (13-18, 5-11) faces No. 3 Nevada (20-10, 12-4).
No. 12 BUTLER 70, CLEVELAND STATE 55, at Indianapolis -- Mike Green matched his career high with 24 points and the Bulldogs beat the Vikings for their fifth Horizon League championship.
ORAL ROBERTS 71, IUPUI 64, at Tulsa, Okla. -- Moses Ehambe hit seven 3-pointers and scored 25 points, and the Golden Eagles beat the Jaguars to win their third consecutive Summit League Tournament title.
WESTERN KENTUCKY 67, MIDDLE TENNESSEE 57, at Mobile, Ala. -- Jeremy Evans had 20 points and 14 rebounds as the Hilltoppers beat the Blue Raiders to win the Sun Belt Conference crown.
WOODEN MOVED -- John Wooden went from the hospital to a rehabilitation center nearly two weeks after the UCLA coaching great broke his left wrist and collarbone in a fall. Wooden, 97, was hospitalized Feb. 29.
