It was going to take a great day for someone to overtake the Cal State Stanislaus men's golf team in Livermore on Tuesday.
The Valdosta State squad answered that challenge, shooting a two-under par and even-par scores to edge the Warriors 875-877 at the Notre Dame de Namur tournament at Poppy Ridge Golf Course.
Brent Witcher led Valdosta with a 68 to finish the tournament as the individual medalist with an 8-under 204.
Erick Justesen led the way for Stanislaus with a 69 in the final round to finish fourth with a 213. Ryan Nickell and Ben Van Vuren both finished tied for 12th with a 222 total score. Van Vuren had an 1-over 73, as did Andy Moren, on Tuesday. Moren was 19th at 225. Jesse Contreras rounded out the scoring with a 226 total.
The second-place finish is the Warriors' third top-three placement in as many tournaments and their fifth during the 2007-08 season.
