The Johansen High boys golf team is showing its depth early in the season.
In a 199-217 Modesto Metro Conference victory over previously undefeated Modesto (3-1) Tuesday at Modesto Muni, the Vikings (4-0) saw all five players shoot a 43 or lower.
Johansen's Daniel Covrig and Modesto's Fredrik Palmer each shot 37s to lead their teams. Johansen also got a 38 from Ryan May and a 39 from freshman Scott Merenda, who eagled the par-5 No. 7 hole.
ENOCHS 219, DAVIS 243, at Dryden Park -- Eagles sophomore Jason Coffey shot a 2-over-par 38, his career-best round, as Enochs (1-3 MMC) took home the school's first-ever league victory, over the Spartans (0-4 MMC).
BEYER 215, DOWNEY 221, at Creekside -- Ethan Ferguson fired a 1-over-par 37 in leading the Patriots (3-1 MMC) past the Knights (1-3 MMC). Matt Reich led Downey with a 39.
TURLOCK 198, PITMAN 227, at Turlock Country Club -- Bulldogs freshman Paul Smith shot an even-par 36, two strokes better than his junior brother Sam -- The Bee's 2007 golfer of the year -- as Turlock (7-0, 3-0) beat the Pride (1-4, 0-3).
HUGHSON 224, MODESTO CHRISTIAN 227, at Modesto Muni -- Donnie Flora shot a 42, leading the way as the Huskies (4-1, 3-1) beat the Crusaders (2-4, 2-2). Zack Strickland shot a 41 for MC.
RIPON 221, RIPON CHRISTIAN 233, at Spring Creek Country Club -- Indians sophomore Daniel Cardoza fired a 2-over-par 38, including an eagle on hole No. 1 and a birdie on hole No. 2, as Ripon (2-3, 1-3) earned its first TVL win of the season, over RC (3-1, 2-1).
CENTRAL CATHOLIC 217, HILMAR 246, at Stevinson Ranch -- For the first time in his career, Hilmar's Travis Little beat Victtor Lopez in a WAC match. Two of the three co-MVPs from last year, Lopez shot a 40 and Little a 39 on the par-36 course. Central Catholic remained undefeated at 6-0 (4-0 WAC).
BIG VALLEY WINS, at Old River Golf Course, Tracy -- Joe Green shot a 37 and Jared Lunsford a 41, leading Big Valley Christian (4-0, 1-0) to the victory in its Harvest Christian League tournament. The Lions shot a 217, 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Jim Elliot Christian of Lodi.
EAST UNION 3, BUHACH COLONY 1, at Atwater -- Erin Arevalo struck out 13 batters, her lowest total of the year, as the Lancers beat the Thunder (7-4). Buhach Colony's Kayla Clarot got her team's only hit, a seventh-inning single. Briona Goulart and Alicia Cook each had three hits for EU (8-2).
CERES 5, GOLDEN VALLEY 4 (10 innings), at Merced -- Cassie Rayford suicide squeezed in the winning run in the top of the 10th inning in the Bulldogs' non-league triumph over the Cougars.
SONORA 11, ARGONAUT 1 (6 innings), at Sonora -- Carson Craven scattered two hits, striking out four, as the Wildcats (4-4) rolled past the Mustangs (0-5).
HILMAR 3, MARIPOSA 0, at Mariposa -- Courtney Ramos struck out 15, scattering two hits, as the Yellowjackets shut out the Grizzlies (2-8-1). Stesha Brazil was 2 for 3, scoring two runs, for Hilmar.
PATTERSON 2, LOS BANOS 1, at Patterson -- Tigers catcher Samantha Kramer hit a shot off the outfield fence in the bottom of the seventh inning that drove in the winning run for the Tigers (4-4).
LINDEN 7, WATERFORD 0, at Waterford -- Ashley Snow pitched a six-hit shutout, striking out four, as the Lions (6-2) toppled the Wildcats.
JOHANSEN 8, SIERRA 1, at Johansen -- Chelsea Gunther scored three runs and Kaitlyn Flores drove in three runs as the Vikings (5-2) defeated the Timberwolves (4-3-1).
RIPON CHRISTIAN 17, BIG VALLEY CHRISTIAN 5, at Modesto -- Briana DeVries hit a three-run home run as the Knights (1-2-2) beat the Lions.
DOWNEY 14, CENTRAL VALLEY 3 (5 innings), at Downey -- Hollie Clark lined three doubles, driving in two runs, as the Knights (2-2) beat the Hawks (1-3).
TURLOCK 7, TRACY 6 (9 innings), at Tracy -- Kara Ferguson lined a two-run single in the top of the ninth inning, sparking a three-run inning that gave Turlock (5-2) the victory over Tracy (2-3).
