OAKDALE -- After falling behind 6-0 with three innings remaining, the Oakdale High baseball team awakened from its slumber.
The Mustangs rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fifth, then Clayton Wagner scored off a Dante Major single in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-6 non-league victory over Vanden (5-1) on Tuesday at Oakdale High School.
Oakdale's six-run rally in the fifth was "base-to-base," according to Mustangs head coach Hondo Arpoika, whose team improved to 6-1-1. He said his team drew some walks along with timely hits.
Then, relief pitcher Marcus Pippen didn't allow a run in the final two innings.
Never miss a local story.
"Marcus did a great job keeping Vanden off-balance," Arpoika said. "They had the go-ahead run on third base with two outs in the seventh, and he got a big strikeout."
Wagner led off the bottom of the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second, then, one out later, scored on Major's single up the middle.
