TURLOCK -- Pitman High point guard Austin Keaton didn't do much scoring Friday night, but he kept his teammates busy with crisp passes that they quickly turned into baskets.
Sam Madden hit three 3-pointers and Adam Lewallen scored 12 of his 16 points in the first quarter, as No. 5 large-school Pitman took a 27-11 lead on its way to a 70-60 win over over Golden Valley in a Central California Conference opener.
Keaton, an all-district pick as a junior, had 10 assists and Madden finished with 20 points. GV's John Sykes had 25 points, but the Cougars could never dig themselves out of their early hole.
LOS BANOS 54, ATWATER 38, at Atwater -- Phil Etcheverry had 16 points and the Tigers (11-5, 1-0) pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Falcons (3-11, 0-1).

DOWNEY 63, DAVIS 57, at Davis -- Down 14-13 after one quarter, the Knights outscored the Spartans 17-8 in the second en route to an MMC win. Joe Napoleon had 20 points and Booker Hinton 14 for Downey (9-4, 2-0). Jose Blanco led Davis (8-5, 0-2) with 16 points.
MODESTO CHR. 96, ESCALON 53, at Salida -- Forward Reeves Nelson (26 points) and Cal-bound guard D.J. Seeley (19) combined for 45 points to lead the top-ranked small-school Crusaders (7-3, 2-0) past the Cougars (2-11, 0-2).
RIPON 57, HUGHSON 47, at Hughson -- Efren Sifuentes scored 26 points and the Indians (8-7, 2-0) outscored the Huskies (10-2, 1-1) 34-21 over the second and third quarters for a 46-33 lead. Kenny Sullivan (17 points) helped pull Hughson to within four points late in the third, before Ripon closed the quarter with a game-clinching run.
RIVERBANK 54, RIPON CHR. 43, at Riverbank -- Lucas Pope helped the Bruins (5-9, 1-1) win with two big fourth-quarter 3-pointers, and Francisco Pineda had seven points in that period when he was 5-of-6 from the line. Pineda finished with 15 points, Pope 13.
Valley Oak League
SIERRA 51, OAKDALE 31, at Manteca -- Missing two starters, the top-ranked large-school Timberwolves (12-2, 2-0) focused on defense while dominating the Mustangs (5-8, 0-2). Sierra led 17-0 after a quarter. Christian Williams (18 points) and Austin Nogueira (15 points) handled the scoring.
"We played man-to-man defense, bumping chests and denying penetration," Sierra coach Scott Thomason said. "We've got to learn to play that hard for 32 minutes, though. We had some letdowns."
CENTRAL VALLEY 58, EAST UNION 55 (OT), at Manteca -- Yama Noorzai had 19 points and Sean McCloud 14 for CV (1-1 VOL) in a game played at Central Valley because the EU roof was leaking.
WESTON RANCH 46, SONORA 34, at Sonora -- James Nunnally had 17 points for the victorious Cougars (10-5, 2-0) and Brenden Evans 17 for the Wildcats (7-8, 0-2).
CERES 65, MANTECA 57, at Ceres -- Brett Sayad had 13 of his 17 points in the first half and Marcus Hilgen 16 of his 18 in the second half to lead the Bulldogs (7-7, 1-1) over the Buffaloes (5-10, 1-1). Mark Scheible had 22 points and Kiwi Gardner 18 for Manteca.
WATERFORD 75, LE GRAND 54, at Waterford -- Guard Jordan Logan led the Wildcats (9-8, 2-1) over the Bulldogs (4-6, 0-2) with 27 points. Zack Fowler added 20.
DENAIR 58, DELHI 46, at Delhi -- The Coyotes jumped out to a 20-8 lead, and a bunch of fourth-quarter 3-pointers by the Hawks wasn't enough to catch them. Mason Wooten had 24 points for Denair (7-8, 2-1) and Rashee Dean 13 for Delhi (0-3 SL). Jared Wilcox had four steals for Denair.
MARIPOSA 66, TURLOCK CHR. 60, at Mariposa -- Brad Spittle was big in the fourth quarter for the Grizzlies (12-4, 3-0), scoring seven of his 11 points, and teammate Tim Oswald hit four big foul shots down the stretch. Oswald had 24 points and 18 rebounds. Eli Davis had 18 points for TC (1-1 SL).

SUMMERVILLE 74, BRET HARTE 63, at Summerville -- Dakotah Richter had 21 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks for the Bears (11-3, 2-0), as the 6-foot-6 Richter outdueled the 6-foot-7 Brett Downey of Bret Harte. Downey had 10 points.

CALVARY TEMPLE 84, JIM ELLIOT CHR. 76, at Calvary Temple -- CT (5-4, 1-0) trailed by 15, but battled back as Gilbert Moya had 19 fourth-quarter points and finished with 32 in a physical game. Jamal Williams added 19 points.
