Section will meet to discuss Franklin
Sac-Joaquin Section Commissioner Pete Saco confirmed there will be a closed meeting of its board of managers today at 9 a.m. to discuss sanctions against the Franklin High football program. The Stockton school had its football season -- and the next two -- canceled after it knowingly played ineligible players in a victory over Tracy. Since that penalty, Yellowjackets head coach Tom Verner resigned and Stockton Unified School District director of athletics Joe Martin was placed on paid administrative leave. Saco said section officials have been negotiating with SUSD administrators about potentially reducing the penalties, although no announcement will be made today. "There could be a news conference down the road," Saco said.
PGA gives Timberlake his own tournament
Justin Timberlake is getting his own golf tournament. The singer and actor will host the PGA Tour stop in Las Vegas, which will be renamed the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Timberlake becomes the 14th celebrity to host an event, joining notables Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Glen Campbell. The five-year agreement begins next year. "We will make sure to make this event unique and memorable, and we will raise money for charity while participating in the greatest game ever played," Timberlake said. "Raising money to better children's lives while playing golf? I can't think of a better way to pass the time." The Las Vegas tournament is part of the Fall Series in October, played after the FedEx Cup. George McNeill is the defending champion.
NBA: Investigation finished
Sacramento police have finished their investigation into allegations that Kings center Justin Williams sexually assaulted a woman and have sent their findings to prosecutors. Police spokesman Matt Young said it will be up to the Sacramento County district attorney's office to decide if any charges should be filed. He would not discuss the department's findings. The district attorney's office was closed Monday for the Veterans Day holiday.
