OAKLAND -- Barry Sims has had his number called too many times this season, and he knows it.
Sims picked up two more false starts Sunday during the Raiders' 24-17 loss to the Houston Texans at McAfee Coliseum.
Sims entered the game with seven false starts this season, tied with two other players (one of them teammate Cornell Green) for the most in the NFL. An official announcing, "False start, No. 65" is becoming a cliché. Sims had three false starts and a holding penalty last week at Tennessee.
"You have to have a short memory when it comes to that," Sims said of his penalties. "I've battled it my whole career. Sometimes I get a little antsy in there, and it's uncalled for. I can't be doing that to the team."
Dealing with penalty-prone players is an area coach Lane Kiffin has learned isn't like his days of stockpiling high school All-Americans at USC.
"Unfortunately it's not like college where you can throw in the next guy," Kiffin said. "Barry pass-protected well, but had penalties."
The Raiders' offensive line committed four of the team's six penalties. Guard Robert Gallery was flagged for a false start, and center Jeremy Newberry was penalized for holding.
SECONDARY CONCERNS -- Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha left the game in the first half with a knee injury. Kiffin said the team would have an MRI done on Asomugha, the Raiders' best cornerback.
Fabian Washington, who was benched in favor of Stanford Routt after two games, will start if Asomugha misses any games.
WHAT RUN DEFENSE? -- The Raiders' once-vaunted run defense lately has become as sketchy and unreliable as Britney Spears' parenting skills.
With a game-high 122 yards on 21 carries, Houston's Ron Dayne became the fifth consecutive running back to hit the century mark against Oakland, joining Tennessee's LenDale White, Kansas City's Larry Johnson, San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson and Miami's Ronnie Brown.
But in a positive light, the Raiders held the bye week to less than 100 yards.
The Texans entered the game with the 29th-ranked rushing attack in the 32-team league.
