The race for the boys team title was as close as it gets Saturday in the Modesto Metro Conference cross country championships at Legion Park.
Matt Maldonado's win in 15 minutes, 43 seconds over the 3.1-mile course helped Modesto High tie Davis with 30 points. The tiebreaker was the sixth man -- and the Spartans' 13th-place Mario Toro was faster in 16:56.
Davis also won the girls title. According to Spartans coach Matt Soderlund, it's the first time in school history the Spartans have won both championships.
Maldonado was followed by teammate Marty Pyeatt in 15:54. Then came the Davis trio of Victor Vieyra (16:05), Roberto Rosas (16:11) and Ronnie Bruce (16:14).
Never miss a local story.
The next Spartans across the line were Chris Izquierdo (7th, 16:25), Steven Thompson (11th, 16:46) and Toro.
Beyer's Crystal Esparza ran away with the girls race in 18:33, followed by Amanda Innes (19:24) and Sophia Villalobos (19:25) of Davis.
Katie Drueen (19:35) of Modesto and Sam Reardon (19:38) of Beyer rounded out the top five.
Brooke Hawkins (7th, 19:58), Angel Bobo (11th, 20:42) and Monica Villalobos (13th, 21:15) also scored for Davis, which totaled 36 points. Modesto (43) was second and Beyer (45) third.
