It takes a lot more than a misbehaving shoelace to beat German Fernandez.
The Riverbank High runner had to stop to tie a shoe early in Wednesday's Trans-Valley League cross country championship at Modesto's Legion Park.
Riverbank coach Bruce Edwards said the loose lace probably cost Fernadez 10 seconds. He still won by almost three minutes, tying his personal best of 14 minutes, 42 seconds on the 3.1-mile course in leading the Riverbank boys to their third TVL title in a row.
Matt Barnum of Escalon was second in 17:33.
Riverbank had 21 points to 46 for runner-up Escalon. Edwards was named Coach of the Year.
TVL GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIPS, at Legion Park -- Pearl Rivers won the 5-kilometer race in 20:45 and teammate Cynthia Lopez was second in 21:22 in helping Escalon (24 points) to the team title. Escalon coach Rick Heflin was named TVL Coach of the Year. Taylor Anderson was third in 21:35 for runner-up Riverbank (41 points).
CCC BOYS CHAMPIONSHIPS, at Donnelly Park (Turlock) -- Andrew Ray of Buhach Colony was the medalist in 15:26 on the 2.95-mile course, but a 2-3 finish by Anthony Mallory (15:42) and Victor Mencia (15:43) helped Golden Valley to the team title.
CCC GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIPS, at Donnelly Park (Turlock) -- Stephany Uriostegui (17:23) of Atwater and Sable Browning (17:43) of Merced finished 1-2, but team champ Buhach Colony took the next three places with Jennifer Ramos (19:24), Laura McIntosh (19:36) and Emily Cortez (19:51). Turlock's girls had won six league titles in a row.
MLL BOYS CHAMPIONSHIPS, at Orvis Ranch -- Matt Airola (16:38) and Travis Airola (16:50) finished 1-2 in leading Bret Harte to the Mother Lode League team title with 23 points to 39 for runner-up Amador.
MLL GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIPS, at Orvis Ranch -- Katie O'Connor (19:35) and Sara Mikesell (20:22) went 1-2 for Bret Harte, leading the Bullfrogs to the team title.
MODESTO 3, JOHANSEN 0, at Modesto -- The Panthers won the Modesto Metro Conference title and remain undefeated in league at 14-0 after a 25-19, 25-15, 25-21 win over the Vikings (4-11 MMC). Modesto coach Adrienne Uecker praised Isabel Santana and Wendy Applegate ("They played great"), and Karen Wall had 23 assists and three aces.
DAVIS 3, ENOCHS 0, at Davis -- Meagan Wiley had six kills and five aces and Erin Ovalle 19 digs in helping the Spartans (2-12 MMC) to a 25-20, 26-24, 25-20 victory over the Eagles.
BUHACH COLONY 3, LOS BANOS 0, at Atwater -- Becca Osmer was one of four players with eight kills and also led the Thunder (9-1 CCC) in digs (27) in a 25-15, 25-9, 25-9 win.
ATWATER 3, GOLDEN VALLEY 1, at Merced -- Marissa Guardado's 12 assists and four aces helped the visiting Falcons (5-5 CCC) upset the Cougars (9-2 CCC) 26-24, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16.
RIPON 3, MODESTO CHR. 0, at Ripon -- Jenna Dunkel, Lauren Feddersen and Kirsten Duren all had seven kills in helping the Indians (12-1 TVL) to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 win over the Crusaders.
ESCALON 3, HUGHSON 0, at Escalon -- Vicki Costa had nine kills and Corrie Dollarhide 12 digs in helping the Cougars (10-4 TVL) to a 25-19, 25-12, 25-12 victory over the Huskies (3-10).
ENOCHS VS. DAVIS TODAY -- The Davis Spartans (4-3, 2-0 MMC) look to remain unbeaten in league when they face the Enochs Eagles (1-6, 0-2 MMC) tonight. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at Downey High School.
