Just a day removed from its season-opening loss, the Modesto Junior College volleyball team bounced back Wednesday with a nonconference sweep of host Chabot.
The Pirates won 30-20, 30-28, 30-26 in Hayward, getting strong presence at the net as Allison Mikkelsen led with 11 kills and Tanya Jennings had eight.
On Monday, Modesto (1-1) lost in four games to Cabrillo, which was more seasoned with three matches already to its credit.
Modesto coach Dave Winfrey said the Pirates worked out some kinks and showed quick improvement against Chabot.
Never miss a local story.
"One of the things we were looking to improve was our middle attack," Winfrey said. "Our middle was more effective and that opened up the outside hitting for us. That's how Mikkelsen got the kills she got."
Brittany Nelson had 21 assists and Corrisa Jacomini led with 11 digs.
CHICO ST. 3, CSU STANISLAUS 0, at Chico -- The No. 19 Wildcats won the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener 30-11, 30-22, 30-25.
Stanislaus got off to a slow start, but played tougher in the second and third games, coach Chris Difani said.
Freshman Jen Gee led the Warriors (2-7, 0-1 CCAA) with seven kills and Megan Loghry added six. Nicki Brown had 17 assists and Megan Britton had 10 digs for Stanislaus.
The Warriors next travel to Arcata for a Saturday match with Humboldt State.
