ON THE DIAMOND: Allie Walljasper batted .482 one hit shy of .500 with 20 RBIs, a .557 on-base percentage, an .815 slugging percentage and struck out just four times in 72 regular-season plate appearances. Those numbers alone compiled in the rugged Valley Oak League probably were good enough to earn her Player of the Year honors. But the 6-foot-1 junior didn't make her name with her bat. Walljasper is a pitcher. A power pitcher, pure and simple. She was 18-2 during the regular season her only losses coming to city rival East Union and playoff qualifier Oakdale with a 0.47 ERA. Opponents batted .088 against her and had an on-base percentage of just .149. In 120ª innings, she struck out 227 and walked just 24 nearly a 10/1 ratio.
The third time at the CIF State Cross Country Championship was not only a charm for Riverbank's Mikayla Florez, it also produced a charm ... as in a state medal.
In the 16 years Glen Bass has been affiliated with the Sonora High cross country program, Steven Grolle is the only runner to reach the medal stand at the CIF State Cross Country Championship.
