Suspect arrested in vending machine theft in Turlock

Police arrested a 37-year-old man they caught breaking into vending machines over the weekend, authorities said today.
According to Turlock police, officers saw Shane Schmidt drilling into a vending machine at the Cost Less Market on West Main Street early Saturday. When they approached, Schmidt allegedly tried to hide property behind the machine.
Officers found a backpack full of quarters, a Dremel drill and a lock. According to police, one vending machine had been emptied of its money and Schmidt was working on a second.
He was arrested on charges of damaging property, possession of burglary tools, petty theft and resisting arrest.
