Three women and two men were arrested in connection with an armed after-hours robbery in west Modesto.
Detective Steve Stanfield said one of the owners of International Market at 1219 Carpenter Road invited a female friend to hang out with him and a male employee at the business Sunday night.
She brought two women with her.
About 10:30 p.m., two men who knew the three women showed up at the business uninvited and engaged in a confrontation with the business owner and his employee, police said.
One of the men in the second group, 35-year-old Justin Wheelock, armed himself with a tire iron and threatened the owner and employee, Stanfield said.
Wheelock, the other man who arrived with him and the three women took money from the victims' wallets, as well as from the business's cash register, and fled in a white truck, police said.
As police were being dispatched to the scene, an officer driving east on Woodland Avenue saw the suspects' vehicle heading south on Ninth Street, Stanfield said.
The officer turned his patrol car around and stopped the truck at Ninth and M Street, where Wheelock ran from the front passenger side of the truck, Stanfield said.
After a short search of the area, he was located hiding in the bushes at the Modesto Irrigation District offices.
Wheelock was arrested on suspicion of robbery, conspiracy and resisting arrest.
Also arrested on suspicion of robbery and conspiracy were Nicholas Mitchell, 27, of Waterford; Shannon Clinton, 25, of Modesto; Tenaya Monk, 26, of Empire; and Anna Shackelford, 22, of Modesto.
