CERES -- The fire is still smoldering but flames are pretty well out at the Bonzi recycling plant where a blaze this morning sent black smoke billowing into the air and started some grass fires nearby.
The fire started about 10:30 a.m. and burned bundles of plastic and cardboard, and then spread to 50 or 60 acres of grassy fields nearby, said Royjindar Singh, spokesman for the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department. Fire crews were able to stop the flames before they reached buildings on Whitmore Avenue and Rockefeller Drive.
Roads around the plant were closed as up to 75 firefighters and other emergency crew members worked the scene. Whitmore had reopened by about 2 p.m. but Morgan Road was still closed.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. There were no reports of injuries.
