A 2007 Pontiac G6 was the big finale of a two-day giveaway ending the second year of the Stanislaus County Office of Education's "Every Day Counts" campaign to improve student attendance.
Johansen High School freshman Armando Jose Pena was presented the $14,000 car this morning. Thousands of other county students got visits from "Prize Troopers” who gave away gift cards, Modesto Nuts and movie tickets, iPods, digital cameras and other rewards.
Pena, who carries a 3.5 grade-point average, had perfect attendance this year.
Several businesses donated money and prizes to be awarded to students at every school that either maintained or improved an attendance rate of at least 95 percent, or increased the attendance rate by a half percent.
