Two people were shot and a third person injured this morning in an argument police say appears to have been over a romantic relationship.
The shooting happened about 5 a.m. on the 1300 block of Monterey Avenue, Modesto Police Sgt. Craig Gundlach said. One man was shot in the abdomen and has since been released from the hospital, he said, and a woman was shot in the hand. She, too, was released, Gundlach said.
Police had a suspect in custody whom they identified as Jonathon Vega, 22, of Modesto, but Gundlach said it was unclear whether Vega was the shooter. He was also injured in the confrontation but wasn’t shot as earlier reports suggested.
Gundlach said initial investigation suggested Vega had at one point a relationship with the woman, Gundlach said. The woman had returned to her husband, who was at the home, Gundlach said. He said the husband’s brother was the man shot in the abdomen. Their names were not released because the case might be classified as a domestic dispute, he said.
The confrontation apparently began early this morning. Police were first called to the home about 2:45 a.m. after Vega is suspected of having rammed his car into the home’s front gate. Police believe Vega returned at about 5 a.m. but what happened next is not entirely clear.
Vega is suspected of having confronted the people in the house, and a confrontation with a gun ensued . Vega was detained by those in the home and was injured in the confrontation but has since been released to police, Gundlach said. As of about 10 a.m., Vega was being held at the Modesto Police Department.
